A Love That Refuses To Go
If you listen carefully
You hear affection’s resounding echoes
And the heart hastens trade winds
into a faint gasp
Each side of the gasp lives a silent prayer
And a love that refuses to go
Eyes closed
The body quakes an anxious craving
into a lump
But defiance
splits each instance of the urge
into two bearable halves
The first, to fashion a benign mirror image
of the love you feel
The second,
to conceal the first
Like humming a sad song
while trampling on dried petals
But there is irony
in driving these shadows
into a sunlit retreat
They reshape neatly into contrition
Like a love
that refuses to go
