Love Poem: A Question of Identity

A Question of Identity

How do you identify yourself to others,
Do you use an alias,
Hide behind a group,
Or rely on past exploits,
Even the reputation of your brother or sister,
Or an obscure relationship with, you know who,
Do you even use shock value for an identity tag.

Do you see yourself as an individual,
Or a follower of,
Maybe you identify as belonging to a particular family,
Or sexual orientation,
Even political persuasion.

I try not to identify you in as any of the above,
To me you are none of the above,
Yet all, of the above and more,
To define who you are,
As only one of the above makes me feel a little sad.
As I see you as a unique individual,
Capable of great things,
If you truly let me know you,
I will see you dressed in a suit of many colors,
And bear witness to your many talents,
That no other can replicate.

So, I ask again,
How do you identify yourself.
