A Special Christmas Gift
Leaving him alone to sleep, she gets up out of their bed;
late night Christmas Eve, their first Christmas since they wed.
Quiet as a church mouse she makes her way down the hall
and over to the Christmas tree that stands against the wall.
Standing there in her negligee in the silence all alone;
being ever so still and careful not to make her presence known.
She hangs on the tree the ornament she had been so careful to hide;
the special ornament as a gift to him, a present from his bride.
They didn’t have much money, as newlyweds seldom do;
she couldn’t afford that special present, something fancy and new.
She prayed that he would like this gift, she had crafted it herself
from odds and ends in her studio she found sitting on the shelf.
A special ornament for the tree to celebrate their new life;
an ornament, specially made with love, to remind him of his wife.
She decorated it so carefully, and inscribed it in plain view;
“On this our first Christmas together, my darling I love you.”
