Acid Rain
Dark puddles form in blurry sheets upon the paving slabs,
Above the torrent, electricity spasms, flashes and grabs,
And everything is grey and drab,
The promise of winter invading again;
Then the memories of you, my one time queen of ice,
With heart melting smiles so chilling and nice,
That you crush my resolve like a vice,
A sometime pleasure combined with pain.
I fixate on half-frozen rivers that kiss the snowy riverbanks,
And of slow-running petrol that fills the yawning petrol tanks,
And of heavy wishes that heaved and sank,
Their only remnants the waters’ rippled sigh;
You were such a vision, a sculpture way back when
I formulated my best-laid plans like those of mice and men,
In the end I would yield and slowly count to ten,
And let you go, as the hunger stammered and would ravenously die.
