After Light
I have taken the winter road
to keep alive with
free falling ice and white
that holds me clear and bare
and sharply cold
to be aware and crave
to cling to naked trees
that shudder in winds
so bleak that I am
In my so sleek and satiny despair
I would
plead to invite
blue birds twine around
my tender spaces
wrapped to keep me warm
with weather fair
Feathering the flames
of tendered traces
you left long ago
with love wishes
for my heart’s repair
I’ve laid palm leaves
upon the courtyard path
open to the sky
as a carpet of repentance
and faith to dance on
with bare feet to remind me
to travel on briskly
waking to keep alive
our songs and how we laughed
awakening our dreams from
under stale pillows
to unravel the arms
that no longer reach
to hold the sun
for now the harvest has fled
autumn has passed
and winter has begun again
and still
We have the world at our feet
and air to catch
to freely breathe
alone from each other
never to let the day
pass by
without love
