An Ode To Friendship
“Best friends forever, we will be.”
That is how you greeted me.
A smile, a laugh, and a cocked head,
“Friends until we’re good and dead.”
I see so clear that warm spring day;
First Friday in the month of May.
I sat alone on the concrete
And then appeared your mismatched feet.
“Green socks for luck and gold to win.”
Your lips released a goofy grin.
“I’m Jane,” I said, “and who are you?”
“Your best friend Ann, but Star will do.
And you can be called by the Moon.
If you want, just tell me soon.
We must decide before the show.
We can’t perform like this, oh no!
They’ll want to post stage names, you’ll see.
We’ll win this one, just stick with me.”
I nodded and my two left feet
Tried hard to keep up with the beat.
We practiced morning, day, and night.
A talent show, oh what a fright!
I hated crowds and eyes on me,
But now I had your company.
We were so bad and many laughed,
To which you said “It was my gas!”
I laughed so hard it hurt inside,
I didn’t mind that you had lied.
It went like this for twelve years more.
Our friendship made my spirit soar.
Today you invite someone new,
To share our vow of Yes, I do.
So on this day, I wish for you
Joy that soars beyond plain view.
Into the heavens up above,
Showering back down rains of love.
‘Cause as you give you shall receive
Abundance that will never leave.
I love you Star and you will see
How brightly shines your destiny.
