And the Snow Fell
And the snow fell in a flurry,
White powder from a compact sky
Dusted down the avenues
Where I was seen to hurry
With a world in winter passing by.
And the snow fell, crackled freezing
On eyelashes with a kiss of ice,
White-out on the cobblestones,
The wind was shrill and breezing
Sweet and sharp as sugared mice.
And the snow fell with a whisper,
Mounting drifts upon the road and wall,
Strangling the narrow paths,
My footfalls sounding crisper
In their haste to navigate it all.
And the snow fell with a violence
As I breached the empty meeting place,
Spectral footprints filling up
And all was boundless silence
You were gone without a trace.
