Baby Wants a Story

What’s that ticking on the wall
Beating under the floor boards
Is that clock up to no good again
Is that a heart cut out and hidden

Someone is listening under cover
For sins committed in the dark
By sinister lovers pretty and fowl
Down and done in the private study

Partners in crime at this hour kiss
In the library where danger lurks
A quiet place for reading books
Not murder which is sure to hurt

Powers lurk after midnight mischief
Bright young faces reflect dim light
On mirrors that look but do not touch
Secrets revealed but kept incognito

Someone small with dimples soft crawls
From beneath his covers white and clean
Inquires of mom and dad directly please
Can I have a cup of water and a story

Parents should never lie to their children in bed
About cut out hearts stuffed under floor boards
All stories should begin with once upon a time
And end with living happily ever after them
