Devotion Poem, Like Snow Leopards
Devotion Poem, Like Snow Leopards
(Written for Jim Eslinger)
Out on one of the Great Plains of Yahweh, It seems
You may have gone on a hunt, or a long searching.
But no matter the reason, in the time apart from you, I
Stand static against the endless sky. We are snow leopards,
You and I, bonded,
Monogamous, champions of love.
But, apart from you, I pretend to wander, although. I am
Actually, lost within. Then comes the consequence:
Being robbed of my spots...excised one after another,
Peeled off by the stroke of the passing moments apart,
Torn and tossed into the gentle tides of flowing air,
Losing my distinctive markings and
Set to become albino. Spirit breaking,
Losing the quicker speed of my feet,
And my mind wishing only its sleep
Until you returnfrom a hospitalization across town?
Or off in some far galaxy? Or dreaming
On the long horizon of Yahweh’s plain?
It is the same when you are even in a different room
And I cannot hear you sigh.
I float between two places always:
Where you are...where I am.
No earthly construct joins.
The decades have knit us as one.
The leopard’s flashing eyes are sure and scan
The plain for the beloved with a wild,
Darting perspective, glistening sight, yearning
For a rewarding glimpse of the other
And once spotted, it shall
Take nothing to sprint through
The realms separating us,
For in the sighting alone
We are already rejoined;
You nuzzle my heartbeats
Making me spring up to meet you
In this, our story, a classic devotion
From its outset, both of us
Lover, both of us the beloved,
Given life together by the author of the first word.
