First Bloom
Though brief, it was a time I’ll always treasure.
Its essence shines, undimmed by fleeting years.
That June was filled with pleasure beyond measure.
First bloom of love was sweetest of premieres.
At summer camp, a boy so cute and funny
became my friend--then boyfriend, very soon.
His brilliant smile made rainy days seem sunny.
His arm around my shoulder made me swoon.
With close of camp and time together pending,
we stole a kiss and promised “Every day,
I’ll call” and “Many letters I’ll be sending.”
Such fervor fourteen-year-olds’ words convey!
Though youth, with its first love and freshness, flees,
we celebrate it through our memories.
