For the Smile of a Young Girl
A young girl
Merely a child herself
She has three loving kids
One barely up to her knees
They cling to her when she has a minute for them
Those minutes are rare and precious to her
She loves them and they love her
They are her life
But the smiles they gave her died a long time ago
Now, she works hard
Straining and struggling
Collecting overtime to buy food and clothes
Yet nothing works for her
She has no home, no hope and no life of her own
Her choices are not what she thought they would be
She doesn’t see a future
I can only watch
I know that the rain in her life has an end
The clouds have a golden edge beyond the horizon
The Sun will shine though once again
She will smile in the warm light
Her future will brighten
And for once in many, many years
The young girl will once again smile.
