Love Poem: For Too Long

For Too Long

For too long I have remembered you
a memory each day pouring over me
washing what was into reflections
of cluttered thoughts from distant days
that may or not have been real

Like flocks of birds gliding in my mind
diving in unison, only to disperse
like fallen leaves that lay scattered
torn in half, as brown petals do
from the stem of a dying rose
drifting into an empty garden
once filled with blooms
tossed about by thoughts of love's demise

Alone with vanishing footsteps, trailing away
to a dull gray horizon, where the sun never rises
and the round sky rolls away leaving nothing
but an empty space where beauty was
before being torn to wilt away
on conquered ground, like a vanquished foe
left bleeding on the steps of loneliness
where love died
