Love Poem: Fragments

Fragments

As gentle as summer rain,

Your love refreshed me.

Time was spent, memories built, secrets shared;

Until one night we lost our grip on love’s translucent game.

As fragile as a crystal glass our new love shattered as it fell from our grasp.

Too soon we tried to touch it, hold it, claim it, as our own.

Too soon for it was much too new and better left alone.

You sorted pieces that were yours and I those that were mine;

Neither of us dared to touch the fragments left behind.

I watched you walk away with yours,

And there I sat with mine.

Tomorrow?

We might start anew to rebuild what we’ve lost.

For if we leave ourselves with only fragments of what might have been,

We’ll never taste the cool sweet wine

that would have filled the glass within.
