He Found Her Farm But Not the Barn Door
He found her farm but not the barn door
he came so close to entering her barn door
on the other side was his, once, loving rose
iridescent petals yearning to be plucked
he had come so far, to be so close
he had passed the barb wire fence
the barking dogs
her father standing shotgun
the five little hogs
the chickens and roosters
mama standing with her broomstick
laughing birds and goats
all the stops and bricks
yet he couldn't get to her, to her
when he spoke she would walk away
her fiery eyes with coals of fire
he couldn't get the sun of day
he knew he was yesterday's toast
he then left her farm, sucking his will
on a long dusty road, he looked back
at the farm in the distance, especially her mill
connie pachecho
