We roamed the hills of Ensley Heights
Not hand-in-hand, but side-by-side
For I was young and much too shy
To take that bold first step

A timeless, honeysuckle spring
Perfection was the simple things
Like sharing our first fountain drink
Which earned a sweet caress

And never did I feel as close
Or see the birds and smell the rose
As when I knew she was my own
And we would never part

But youth cannot enforce its mind
Her family moved in wintertime
What proved to be our last goodbye
Took portions of my heart

Her memory is with me now
As pristine as an unworn crown
Especially when Spring abounds
The boy within me glows

I see us walking through those hills
Past robin's nest and daffodils
I feel her hand within mine still
Alas, she'll never know
