I Met Her On a Patio
I met her
on a patio
she sat and read
my poetry
the sun was out
above the honey locusts
I watched her lips
and fell in love
she sat and read
my poems to me
'neath mottled light
the tree's fine leaves so porous
this soul of mine
her words-my own
in one another's
close company
a warm spring breeze
filled air with waves of crocus
and while she read
I wrote a poem
a sweet one
just to her from me
she rose to leave
as time ran out before us
I slipped the poem
into her purse
I knew somehow
she would know it's me
some day she'd find those words
and think about us
