Long Ago Today
It was very long ago
She didn’t wear makeup then
And her long, long arms
That I remember so well
Would wrap themselves around me
Tightly pressed up to me
Her golden hair
Would whirl and twirl
All about in the wind
As her breath
Fell sweetly
On my lips like honey
These days
She paints her lips
And spends the first
Of her early morning waking hours
Trying to remove the years
And the jeans she once wore
Have been replaced
By dresses
That my mother once wore
She has exchanged her dancing boots
And avant-garde hat
For granny shoes and a cane
And walks more slowly
Then I ever remember
But in the dark
Her long, long arms
Still feel the way they always did
And her words of love
She told me many years ago
Still sound the same
