Love Poem: Love Is But An Illusion

Love Is But An Illusion

You took me to a painful place in my heart
where sanity can drift and unravel;
and asked me to set you free.
Your tears flooded my heart, pooling there,
forcing me to feel the weight of each one.
You had me wandering through a minefield of emotions,
reflecting on the meaning of happiness and pain.
If love is but an illusion that hope promotes,
how can I find it;
and is it worth looking for?
Sometimes, life seems so receptive to my wants
yet non-responsive to my needs.
Seeking answers buried in questions yet to be explored;
I start with who I am and who I wish to be.
And I'm left wondering: was that love,
if it didn't mean anything?
The pain of love, leaving me for another,
burns like no other pain.
To have found someone as rare as you,
and then to willingly give you up;
is near an impossible task.
Yet, struggling with feelings of helplessness
in the face of reality;
I watched as you walked away,
and never looked back.
