Midnight Came Unexpected
She said it was just a poem
But her naked vulnerability
Was all too real; I felt the chill
As the sun quickly set behind
Her cold and bare silhouette
The dark lake like a noose
Strangling sweet memories
Until only a thought remained
As she recalled my name
Just fragmented moments
Like pieces of broken glass
A fog of the places we’d been
My voice became a wailing flute
To think.. we were once music
Now, empty echoes in the wind
I was your strong mountain
My musk was like fresh rain
You laid warm in my safe nest
My blue eyes made you dream
But midnight came unexpected
Left to dance without my hand
Or my whisper.. oh how I miss her
Romantic secrets hidden away
Love’s fire when it was still day
Then you could see my smile
We laughed like we would last
But night was always coming
Bringing regret like a blanket
You could feel the soul numbing
Foreboding hues delivering fear
Neither of us could breathe...
Swallowing loss; death felt near
A loser’s game to recall my name
A silent night in frayed existence
Staring at a bottle of champagne
That cruelly teases of celebration
But our toasting glasses are dry
Replaced with a thousand “whys?”
That lonely night when you grew up
The fairytale of an endless love died
