Love Poem: My Aching Heart

My Aching Heart

You broke my heart- my darling and left it bleeding,
I am shattered, battered and ravaged forever;
my soul and spirit mangled and lost in anguish.
      I recall kissing you goodbye for the last time,
      that cold and stormy winter morning;
      then the police came,
      to tell me you had crashed,
                         and you were dead.
         I have so many memories,
            memories that should comfort;
but they leave me melancholy and missing you,
you were my heart of hearts, my soulmate, my lover.
now you live only in a secret place within me, my truelove,
                           a name engraved.

I remember- I remember dragging you to the opera,
you hated opera but came only because you loved me;
oh, Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake,
      the sensuous sweet melody often put you to sleep.
      but I dreamed of being a dancer,
      and you encouraged me;
      well darling, I am a dancer now,
                              and you are always with me.
         Each performance is for you,
            I pour out my sadness;
and torment and grief as I twirl and leap into the air,
I imagine you in the front row, smiling with pride.
Until my last breath, my darling, the pieces of my heart,
                               will lay in ruin.
