My Best is at Rest

My Best is at Rest.
This is a tribute to my Lifelong Best Friend Katrina.

My Best friend/Sister has passed on from this life.
She lived a life of love. To know her was to automatically love her.
She was a mother, wife, sister, friend, Meme, aunt… all that.

She wasn’t “a” Best friend, she was “The” Best Friend!
Best at Everything! Best dressed, best friend, best buddy, best times…

Oh yes, best dressed she was, Ms. Fashionista for sure!
When she stepped out, she stepped on. FACTS!!!
On necks, on bodies, on toes with the stylish of clothes.

Our birthdays are a day apart. Mine on one day, hers is the next.
We were two years apart.
Although we talked and kept in touch, I hadn’t seen Trina for a while since I moved away, so I decided to have my birthday dinner back home in New Orleans and celebrate with my chosen friends.

This is my Heartfelt text I sent her after my dinner, giving her her flowers.

Dear Sis,
I just wanted to say how grateful and thankful I am to have you as a Lifelong Best Friend, Sister, Capricorn connector, birthday buddy and so much more.
We have been friends since I was sixteen and now from 16 to 60 and counting, I thank God for you being there with me during my journey of growth.
Thank you Trina for always being there in more ways than one.
Thank you for the laughter, the tears, the clubbing (and we did some clubbing), the fears, the talks, the times we hung out and hung in, for the letters we wrote when we had a lil fall out, for us being pregnant at the same time (me with my son and you with Kacey), for the maternity pants you made me, lol, for the knuckle heads I was goo goo over, Greg, Michael B, Troy, Brown, Sanford, Lou (with the green eyes) Sugar Bear and a few others, and the ones you were goo goo over, Slick Leo, Eddie, Major and about 30 more I can’t name right now. From Schwegmann, the Superstore, the Convention Center and all the jobs we had… we made it fun.

Thank you Sis for all the memories we had running from the Famous, to Bill’s, to Violet to go to Glady’s, Club Escape, the daiquiri shops, the Bottom Line, Whispers, and all the other hole in the walls we hung in, I had the best times with my best Sis,
For Momma Shirley and your family being my family, for you being there for me to help me pack and move when I was moving, for the times we are apart, but are always together in heart, for our never ending love, understanding and compassion for each other, I am forever grateful.

There is so much more with us I can write about and reflect on that we have done and shared over these 42 years (yes, that’s how long it’s been), but I won’t write them all in this text, just know Sis, we have a life long of memories with so many more to come.
I appreciate how no matter how busy everyone was for my birthday, everyone took the time out of their day to come be with me and that means sooo much to me. My heart is so full.

Anyway, love you dearly my Big Sis Trina and thank you for making my birthday a special one.
Next year will be even more fun for us and the year after that and after that and after that and so on…
So, here are your flowers Sissy!

Love Always,
Colette

(Her response)
Awww… thank you! Everything you stated was factual except for the Major guy never goo, goo over him. WORST RELATIONSHIP EVER! but that’s all part of life experiences. We’ll always be sisters no matter the distance or communication, we had so many laughters together and that’s what I stay focused on. Sista’s for a life time. Looking forward to many more great times with you!
Hugs n Kisses

I am so very grateful to God for our paths crossing, for our genuine connection and for the precious gift of our bond, our love, our friendship and sisterhood.

Yeah, whenever we had a lil fall out, we would write “love letters,” saying sorry, depending on who was wrong and back at besties we were.
I still have those letters to this day, from over 40 years ago.
Work was always fun with us. It was so easy for us, we clicked instantly. You might as well say we had the same momma, cause even as a young teenager, Momma Shirley took me in as her own, no questions asked.

Here’s a recap of a moment in time.

Momma Shirley had a red car Trina used to drive when we went out clubbing. Well one night, The Famous, a club we used to go to (Trina used to mess with the DJ, that’s why we used to be in there hot and heavy, and until the lights came on, lol), well, they decided to check id’s. Now any other time I was able to get in. Well, I wasn’t 21, so this particular night when we got there, you had to be 21, so I couldn’t get in. So Trina told me to wait in the car and she would go in and be back in a few minutes. (Yeah right, lol)

Well, after sitting in the car for about 20 minutes, I decided to take the car and drive home.
Now mind you, I had two choices, drive the car or continue to sit there. Keep in mind, I never drove a car by myself before and I did not have a license. I kept thinking and saying to myself, I know I can do it, I know I can do it, I know I can do it. I just gotta drive down, turn, then turn down this street, keep straight all the way down, turn and park.
Alright, so there, I did it! I took the car and drove it home safely.
(Thank You God)

So when Trina called and asked where I was, I told her I went home. So now, I had to drive back to the club to get her and lo and behold, that’s how I learned how to drive, lol.

Some might say, she wrong for leaving me outside, but that was 40 years ago and I wasn’t mad, I was ecstatic. It boosted my confidence, I learned how to drive and been driving ever since. And besides, that was how our story was written, so thank you Bestie!
