My Mother
Gazing out the window
at the waning afternoon sun
she leans forward in her soft chair
to catch the last bits of daylight.
She recalls her late husband, son, and siblings
as the light fades and rain begins to fall.
She thinks about her grandchildren
and great grandchildren;
how lucky she is to be around
watching them grow, hearing their laughter
savoring these moments.
As darkness settles
she holds on to tender thoughts of her family
that lifts her spirit
as she drifts off to sleep
hearing the rain against the window.
