My Sister Lollipop
Dedicated to my dear sweet sister, Lollipop, with all my love.
LOLLIPOP
This is the story
Of a sister of mine
The one close to my age
Always making me shine
Just 13 months younger
Born in the world after me
Becoming close to each other
She was my first sibling to be
Now I was a bit jealous at first
Almost biting off her baby toe
Well I was told that’s what I did
I was too young to really know
She was named after my mother
Nellie Joan being her name given
Most family just call her Little Nellie
It’s Lolly I said when we were children
When I heard a song called Lollipop
That immediately became her name
Throughout time I tried to say Nellie
Never could so it’s Lollipop to remain
Nellie means a most beautiful woman
Who always has a shining ray of light
The one to spiritually enlighten the soul
With a path sparked to shine so bright
The Joan name means God is gracious
A gift from God, sensitive, gentle and kind
To lift spirits up and make others happy
Following God’s footsteps, the best to find
Of course Lolly means something sweet
And Lollipop means sucked in by the sun
Those who actually know her always say
She is sweet and kind, a joy to everyone
We became very close to one another
Doing everything together as we grew
Laughing, singing and dancing with fun
In the neighborhood with those we knew
Our mom and dad both sang together
As they came from singing families too
We grew up always singing with them
That’s why it’s our favorite thing to do
Sometimes we even speak in unison
And read each other’s lips to a song
Most nights we used to get in trouble
For continually singing all night long
Time has brought us through the ages
I know our harmonizing will never stop
These days we aren’t together as much
I’ll still always feel a closeness to Lollipop
