Once There Were Flames
To love and be loved
is what it means to be human.
Love fuels passion's burning flame,
while seducing your heart with the nectar of desire;
and you fall under its spell.
Like the innocence of a child
enamored with the beauty of a dream;
you are a slave to your emotions.
Betrayal shakes the foundations of logic,
causing an inward migration
to the safety of your thoughts;
where you remove yourself from reality
and surrender to your feelings.
The absence of love
fosters feelings of emptiness and isolation;
and like the Tin Man
craving to hear the beat of his heart;
you are left with the sound of silence.
But the embers of love
continue to smolder as they consume your heart;
leaving only ash,
where once there were flames.
