Rest, My Child
Come, my Child, lay your head on my chest,
You must close your weary eyes.
It is time for you to take some rest
And to dream where your Angel flies.
Soar with her to Heaven’s height
All the while that you sleep,
And share with her reposed delight
While I, the watch, shall keep.
For watch I must throughout your youth-
Throughout all of your growing days-
To guide you down the path of Truth
And to share in Love’s heavenly ways.
For a day will come too soon I fear
When you will strike out on your own,
And you may travel in a different sphere-
In a world that is vastly unknown.
You’ll see the things I warned you about
And hoped to protect you from.
The sins of man will seek you out
To make your conscience numb.
But for now, my Child, take your rest,
You’re too young for that which harms,
So lay your head upon my chest
And sleep safely in my arms.
