Rex the Pound Puppy

Rex was a pound dog
There he sat all caged
A small and tiny puppy
Waiting to be saved

He sat in his cage at night
Looking for a friend
A person he could lay with
A family to defend

Then one early morning
Rex awoke to see
A little girl outside his cage
Starling interestingly

Daddy she said, pointing
Can I have that dog?
Why not go for something small
He said, like a mouse or frog?

She gently stood at the cage
And whispered in his ear
”I will come back for you
I will not leave you here”

So they left the pound
And Rex felt quite sad
He thought he found a friend
For a second he was glad

So the next day he lay there
In his cage alone
He waited for that little girl
To come and take him home.

But she never came
So Rex gave up hope
He knew this is where he would stay
He knew he had to cope

He lived there ten long years
In the pound he called home
But one day would change his life
He would no longer be alone

A girl walked into the pound
And pointed at his face
She said I want to take him home
Straight back to my place

The girl was a familiar
And though Rex wasn’t sure
He thought that he had seen her
Another time before

Rex remembered those eyes
The girl from long ago
She remembered him from all those years
And still had not let go

She took him in the car
And said “I did come back”
“I’m sorry that it took so long
Forgive me please for that”

Rex was overcome with joy
And though he’d waited long
He finally found the family
That he wanted all along
