Love Poem: Saudade

Saudade

I will turn back the pages of time
To memories of long, long ago that still shine bright
It was a brief love . . .
Yet, quietly unfolds in my dreams

We met in Chiado, Lisbon
I was a tourist shopping for books and mementos
When I stopped for a coffee
And your dark brooding eyes captured me

My exquisite Portuguese man
Soon we were walking hand in hand in the city architecture
You showed me all the sights of Lisbon and hidden beauty
We dined on fish from local fishermen, laughing
I recall watching Bee-Eating birds with awe

I was swept up in your deep voice and strong arms
Our lovemaking was unbelievable, truly sublime and blissful

Although my memories are breathtaking
I feel a deep grief for this love
That was too brief and not meant to last forever
It did- it lives in my mind and dreams
Where I remember us walking the beach at night, touching

Oh, often you come drifting to me
For this love we had lives forever in me and you
In our memories that even when ancient and antique will not fade
I cannot fathom that I will ever forget you

We both knew we could not be
That our love was just a juncture of time, our stage
But you are still with me every single day, every moment
Those brooding eyes will always haunt me

Love only a whisper
Can be everlasting and meaningful to the heart
Even when wrinkled aged and grey-haired

It was long ago and so much has happened
But those days of yesterday are treasures found
In the bouquet of magical moments collected in my life
I am chained happily to this love found years ago
