Save Me the Last Dance

"Would you save me the last dance in next life?" he asked her,
Her tears, though at distance, were touching his heart,
She had not liked new poem that first quite upset her,
He re-worked last stanzas; her tears love of art.

“I have no right to ask for a promise,” he proffered.
And she knew this sharing, in fact, deeply felt,
For long distance was not the sole flaw of love offered,
Though joy at connecting this way made hearts melt.

It's not clear that either was looking for re-match,
(Though sparks that keep jumping can also inspire),
But a love that's so ethereal’s quite hard to dispatch,
My soul declaration should not raise her ire.

The young Jewess and Christian did not ask for trouble,
But still, the first roses she garnered, he gave,
A long friendship that shared marriage hopes, divorce rubble,
Control the big issue we’ll take to our grave.

She is always one friend that I hope understands me,
Although I accept she can’t be at my side,
But I see that she values my words, and I'm home free,
(For touching the heart of her nature's my pride).
