Say Goodnight, George

SAY GOODNIGHT, GEORGE
At curtain call a lady dressed in white
rose from the mist, and to the spotted light;
where crowned, stood all the love she ever knew
who carried on, until the show was through,
still faithful to the one who made love right.

She blew a kiss for him, out to the world's aplause,
and they all loved his life for what it was,
so she apologized, but made her claim
to what was rightfully part of her fame,
and said he had to go now, just because.

And never would there be another one
so loved--yet willing that he should move on,
they knew that Gracie's waited in the wings
and long enough, for what his dying brings,
and in between a laugh, they find him gone.
