Love Poem: Scarlet Ribbons

Scarlet Ribbons

Scarlet Ribbons

Angry bullets curse and swear
Paint scarlet ribbons through your ice blonde hair
Scarlet ribbons burst the skies
Scarlet ribbons haunt my eyes

Then time stands still as I drift away
Drift away to that sun-kissed day
When we kissed goodbye, you began to cry
Then I did too, as I wallowed in your eyes of blue
Ran my fingers through your warm blonde hair
Loosed the scarlet ribbon there
‘Wrap it around your heart,’ you cried
‘'til you return to my side
Our love is one while we’re apart
With my scarlet ribbon around your heart’

Bullets whizz, missiles scream
As I awaken from my dream
‘Kill the Hun!’ the Tommies yell
‘Kill the Hun! Rot in Hell!’
Bayonets flash
Bodies clash
To a gruesome dance
In this final stance

Scarlet ribbons slice and slash
Scarlet ribbons scream and thrash
Scarlet ribbons ‘til death do part
A bayonet plunges through my heart
Unwraps your scarlet ribbon there
Waves it proudly in the air
Cold grey steel draped in red
With your scarlet ribbon lying dead

‘Wrap it around your heart,’ you cried
‘'til you return to my side
Our love is one while we’re apart
With my scarlet ribbon around your heart’
