Scary Thought
The child awoke and stumbled through the dark hallway
Feeling his way to his parents’ room, his eyes slowly adjusted.
He heard sounds that awakened him, or so he thought,
Sounds that alarmed him, almost as if someone was dying.
He never heard these sounds before and hoped to never again.
He continued on and the sounds got louder and even louder.
Not knowing what to expect, he pushed on through the darkness,
The corridor that always contained his worse fears, nightmares.
Coming upon the doorknob, his small hand gripped so tight,
He let out a scream, one to match the scream he just heard.
The doorknob wouldn’t turn, he feared death awaited him.
There! He heard something, someone approaching the door.
The door swung open and in the darkness, his father came.
“Are you okay, Jack? What happened?” his dad said, comforting him.
He could see his mother in the darkness, sitting, fumbling ,
Blankets scattered, he thought for sure something wasn’t right,
But his father took him back to bed saying,” I love you little man, goodnight.”
As his eyes slowly closed, wanting to fall asleep he heard
His father walking down the hall, the door closing and a laugh.
He felt better knowing no one was hurt, that his parents were safe,
As he drifted back to sleep, his happy place, where his parents now were again.
