Love Poem: Selkie

Selkie

Barefoot she walked along the sandy shore,
her golden hair soft fluttering in the breeze.
Like gossamer the flimsy dress she wore,
her soul at peace with joy and youthful ease.
The island shimmered in a summer haze
across the bay, the sea so calm and bright.
As in a dream, it caught and held her gaze,
Her quickening heartbeat spoke of her delight,
as at a lover's silken touch sublime.
The sky had deepened to a burnished gold,
a spectacle of eloquent design
and artistry, exquisite to behold.
She felt the warmth of sand between her toes,
and at the water's edge, the rise and fall
of distant oceans did their truths disclose.
In perfect harmony she heard their call,
an ancient call that echoes down the years,
to speak of things unknown and deeds as yet
undone, and pleasures ofttimes turned to tears,
as lovers' hearts she breaks without regret.
She pauses and with scarce a backward glance,
she steps into the silvery beckoning foam.
It welcomes her as in a merry dance,
of kindred seaborne spirits coming home.
Her lovely form is taken by the waves
and she is gone. Her footprints in the sand
alll that remains of everything he craves.
Forlorn and unbelieving, still he stands.
At length he hears, above the ocean's swell,
a phantom whispering in the wind, "Farewell".
