Shades Away
From afar your coat
Is black as magic,
And I can’t help but see you
With a wand and crystal ball
Impervious to fate.
Closer, that black is the deep blue
Of ocean on the horizon;
Right before me but
Too far to swim to touch
Without drowning in riptide.
Your hair is infinitely blacker
Than fabric or night skies could aspire.
It clashes with your collar
Where the strands shag over,
But your eyes when they turn
To mine
Have almost faded black to blue
And put up no such fight.
I long to smooth your ruffled
Raven feathers,
Swim into your eyes and find
You the blackest calmest trench of sea—
But the chance remains,
You’ll fly away
Before I can even
Breathe.
