Sonnet 70 'I Still Awaken In the Deep of Night'
I still awaken in the deep of night,
And chase the shadowed shapes that flee the Light.
Within my heart a shadow standing there
A silhouette that prints itself on air
And are you there, still, my beloved Bride?
The gate is open, and there at your side,
A silhouette of Light – can that be Me?
The Celestial Man that waits beyond the Sea?
O, rest in peace, my stirring, troubled heart,
And know thy Love can only once depart!
For she’s no Shade, nor shadow, now, but Bright
Ascended Victory shining in the Light!
O, Sleep! O, Sleep, thou lonely man, and know,
That after sleeping falls the pure, clear snow.
