Sweet Summer Night

The hot cars slowly wend their way down Mandalay boulevard. Young men whistle and honk at the pretty girls walking away from the beach and toward the nearest club. It is nighttime here in Clearwater Beach. We take in the various sounds and scents and revel in each experience. The ice cream shop is just a block away and soon we'll be indulging in the best ice cream ever. Everything tastes better when you're on vacation. She asks me if I want a lick of her cherry vanilla cone and I in turn offer her a taste of my dark chocolate. Later, around midnight, it's back to the beach again, this time to take in the starry view and listen to the waves gently and peacefully caress the shoreline. After laying there a few moments her hand touches mine and a tingle shoots down my spine. Married almost thirty years and she still gets to me. I begin to ramble on about the awesomeness of the cosmos and how each star is similar and yet unique. From our perspective they seem so close together, yet we know they are light years apart from one another. Suddenly she sits up and places her finger upon my lips as if to shush me, then slowly begins to unbutton her top. Tonight, she and the cosmos are mine.

luminaries glow
each one like the eyes of God
transcendent rapture
