That Walk
I watched her
about a block or so away
walking toward me
her wheat blown hair
wth silver strands
tossed about
by the brisk northern wind
and that walk
walk that only she knew
with a quick gait
bouncing from side to side
I noticed her looking away
but knew her well enough
to know
she knew
that I was up ahead
and that she would suddenly turn
and with an act
of total surprise say
hello! I didn’t see you there
We hugged
with a hug of old lovers
you know the kind
sort of nice but restrained
and spoke of the lost times
trying to fill the other in
as quickly as possible
on those unknown missing years
knowing that soon
each of us
would be on our way again
So as the cold Canadian wind
whipped all about
we told abbreviated stories
of the passing years
ending with a smile
ending with a hug
ending with a kiss
as I watched her
turn and go on her way
with that walk
that walk that only she knew
you know the one
with a quick gait
as she bounced from side to side
