The Breakup
The lights caste a golden glow upon the tears
That cascade down the trembling cheek.
Her chest shudders with every gasp of breath
She fights to take to beat back defeat.
He couldn’t tell her face to face his choice
To leave her for another, to retract his love.
To break all the promises he gave to her,
To cherish her heart like he should’ve.
The phone lye’s scattered across the floor,
Along with her heart and what remains
Of her existence; the fibers of bliss.
With it gone she will never be the same.
So with her sister’s hand, she gathers his things
And throws it into the fire’s mouth to see,
Her past turn to ash and from there be reborn
To something entirely exquisite and free.
