The Dove
The Dove is a sign of love and peace,
Preached of holiness, devotion and grace.
Genesis recalls, Noah released a Dove,
An Olive branch to forgive Human race.
Doves portrayed in song and prayer,
Scripture, Writings, Poetry and Verse.
Rising on high the messenger of hope,
Cleansing spirit to deliver and disperse.
The Dove of peace is pure and White,
Maternal, gentle, a place in our heart.
Turtle Doves depicted, billing and cooing,
A feature of Masters in Biblical Fine-art.
Reading my words, you may have gathered,
This creature is revered and respected.
Symbol of affection and all that is good,
White Dove, we keep you protected.
My fascination for this wondrous bird
Led me to seek out the truth
My Internet search was rich with answers
I became a Columbidae Sleuth
The Dove is nothing more than a Pigeon
But gets a far better press
Pigeons are beheld as flying Vermin
Defiling Cities and making a mess
Can you imagine the soulful Boy Chorister?
Singing, “O for the wings of a Pigeon”
Or “Two Turtle Pigeons” at Christmas
There is no obvious rhyme,
except for a Duck called Widgeon.
Over 300 species of Pigeons are known,
We romanticise only the White Dove.
The purest of Birds blessed by Lord God.
The Pigeon plays foul,
while the Dove portrays love.
