The Gypsy and the Georgio
She danced around the campfire,
As the flames reached into the night.
It was then that he walked by,
But she knew that he wasn’t right.
Maria was just a gypsy girl,
And with a georgio she fell in love.
But he did not return her affections,
And she had no help from up above.
Desperately she turned to the Devil,
She sold her family’s souls for evil things.
He turned her father into a sound box,
Her mother into a bow, four brothers into strings.
The Devil then took the six souls,
And he turned them into a violin.
Maria quickly learnt to play it well,
And the courtship of the georgio did begin.
The gorgio fell in love with her,
But the Devil had two more souls to claim.
He took Maria and her lover to Hell
And the violin fell to the ground, where it did remain.
A poor gypsy boy found it there,
He played constantly till he got a wife.
And ever since that fateful day,
It has been the musical symbol of gypsy life.
