The Promised Land
The Promised Land
A pretty girl, her dance card filled
Had found her shining knight
A handsome man with soft gray eyes
She knew that it was right
It wasn’t long before she wore
A shiny wedding band
He vowed that he would take her
To find the Promised Land
Through the many years together
Doing all that could be done
They’d made a decent living
And raised a loving son
Her life had been a storybook
She’d realized her dreams
But the path toward the Promised Land
Isn’t always what it seems
They worked to make a better life
The hours were long and hard
And just when they’d found time to rest
God dealt another card
It happened very slowly
And her thoughts began to fade
He couldn’t stop the hands of time
Despite how hard he prayed
Her mind became so cloudy
And she couldn’t understand
Why everything she knew so well
No longer was at hand
But, he was there to comfort her
And be her earthly guide
And, though he too was growing weak
He stayed there by her side
Eventually, his hourglass
Lost its final grain of sand
And he went to prepare a place for her
Inside the Promised Land
And, as he reached the throne of God
He looked back through the gate
He wanted God to bring her home
But, he knew he’d have to wait
She had a few more hearts to touch
A few more smiles to share
She taught us all to savor life
She showed us how to care
Then one day the angels came
And took her by the hand
They led her to eternal life
Within the Promised Land
A healthy spirit reached the gates
A mind no more deprived
And the man she’d loved for all those years
Was there when she arrived
She took her place beside him
And he gently took her hand
And together they have made a home
Within the Promised Land
