The Ring
I looked at the diamond
You placed upon my hand
And looked at how it was enclosed
Within a golden band.
I thought to myself
Of what it really means
And how it came from your heart
A very complex thing.
The diamond had many, many cuts,
One for every month we loved,
The brilliance of its shine,
That had once been rough.
Then I looked closer
At the diamond set in gold
And noticed it was a heart
For me to have and hold.
I did not see a single flaw,
Not even one or two
For when you love someone,
You know your heart is true.
I looked at the setting,
Which held it tightly in its place,
And saw a small set of hands,
In which to keep it safe.
I looked at the band of gold,
And stared at it for a while,
And saw that it was perfect
In size and depth and time.
There was not a scratch upon it
Nor a breaking point
It only signified to me,
The love that’s in your heart.
I took it off for just a time,
And glanced inside the band,
And saw the words, “forever true”
Forever, love your man.
