The Smile

Her indifference was merely a facade
she bore a staggering smile, simple and un-flawed
rampant and with ease she displayed the fraud
A toying deception lay openly hidden across her face
and I was sure it was to me she teased and called
with all that beauty and poignant grace.
Without a single word she caught my eye
with a come hither soft whispered awe
it's depth almost made me cry.
Somehow, she quickly set my heart afire
and my body burned and could not easily withdraw
and all that lacked was her own desire

A step closer, I smiled back and asked aloud
   “Do I know you?”
as it echoed through the crowd.
Her smile never once faltered or faded
and she stared inquisitively then chuckled as if on cue
"Why would I?" and thus I was briefly blockaded.
Without pause or hesitation, I took her hand in mine
and asked once again more sincerely renewed
“Perhaps we could share a glass of wine?”
Her hand pulled away and she stepped back
the smile disappeared and now askew
with it came that harsh reverberating slap.

Alas, I learned that beauty and smiles aren’t always true
and lie in the eye of the beholder
for beneath the surface the unseen is often misconstrued.
The future now cautions me to take a longer, better view
and keep more distant and a little less bolder
with an approach perhaps sedate or more demure.
Remember what they say though
about he who hesitates is lost as they grow older
so, in retrospect if we don’t try, we never know.
So to the lady, that beauty with the false alluring smile
look away and give me the cold shoulder
keep it to yourself with your opened hidden guile.
