Those Little Words
THOSE LITTLE WORDS
I don’t know why I spoke those words;
They seemed to come from nowhere.
She seemed surprised, of course she would,
We’d never sought to go there.
We’d lived next door since childhood,
Close, like brother with sister.
But, until the night in question,
I’d never even kissed her.
The scene, our school reunion.
In the middle of July.
We didn’t go there together,
I don’t remember why.
But, when the evening ended,
With the lighting turned down low,
We found ourselves together
In the Viennese so slow
We were gliding, not too expertly,
Over the polished floor
When, out of the blue, it hit me,
The feeling I couldn’t ignore.
Body to body, cheek to cheek
Quite suddenly I knew.
I whispered quietly to her
Those three words, “I love you.”
