UNDERGROWTH

UNDERGROWTH

Two figures hesitate in the undergrowth
A man dressed in black, a lady in green
Maybe they have paused to let nature in
A carpet of Spring flowers at their feet
Or that their meeting remains discreet
And that their agreed future may begin
Altogether, it’s quite a romantic scene
Imminently, each to plight their troth

A walk in the forest, and alone at last
Trees, slender and reaching to the sky
Arranged as if they are a congregation
All in rows, clearly a planned planting
One can almost hear them all chanting
The leaves whispering in a sussuration
And none here can ever question why
It’s to celebrate a future, not the past

It’ll soon be time when they must go
Turning back yet leave nothing behind
Their meeting ended sealed with a kiss
Love is a gift to give, never to borrow
Both will experience a new tomorrow
Even the undergrowth feels their bliss
It is a love they were so lucky to find
Both they and the undergrowth know
