Vanishing Love
I am sitting on my couch
actually reclining on it
after a sip of red vintage wine
I hear the sweet sounds of children playing
And the occasional hoot of a car passing.
The one warms my heart
The other strikes the cord
Of a maddening world!
I am now sitting up on the couch
My heart no longer at ease
My lass no longer at my side
To cry at my loss I know not how
To laugh at my loss I know not how
I look out of the window
And there she goes, dancing
There she goes, chattering!
I close my eyes- shut them even
Nay, I plug my ears as well
That the dance and chatter
Should pass me by without my hurting
Should pass me by without my weeping
And hasten, thoughtless even
To the ugly loveless feasting
To the ugly loveless world!
But, and this I know to be true
For my heart convulses with it,
My love for her will yield not!
To tether it I know not how
To let it fly after her I dare not try
So I open my eyes again
And again peep out of the window
To catch a glimpse of my vanishing love!
Should I have barred the door?
Should I have unlocked my heart?
And revealed my true emotion
And invited Cupid to sit with me?
O it is no use now, I fear
Nor will it be any use tomorrow
For I see her dancing with another lover
I see her locked in his arms!
