Wait, I Am Scanning the First Page
Do you wonder what I’m contemplating
in this room, and why my eyes stare blankly
when your eyes tiptoe and sneak into mine?
How? How can I vomit the toads in my head?
Your eyes may look aghast seeing your
own image hopping among the toads I vomit.
Do you know how many times a day I go and
sit beneath that mango tree, we first met at?
We talked nothing. We stood; our eyes feasted.
Do you think I talked too much?
You simply nodded your head. The toe of your
right foot dug the ground like a hedgehog.
My eyes wept till the hedgehogs reappeared.
In March, they came up, met mine, and then
they sat sipping mango sap hours and hours.
I don't remember you uttering that phrase.
Alone, in this room, hours ….. and hours ….
I scan that first page of our tale,
looking for that phrase, I wanted you to utter,
“Love You!”
