What Do You See
When you look in the mirror what do you see?
Do you see the person that everyone sees?
I don't mean the image that is imitating you,
Can you look inside and see the real you?
When folk passing by ask how you are,
Do you tell the truth or hide the reality?
I don't believe we will ever answer what I ask,
because in their sunshine we all like to bask
They offer a life that is hard to define,
Maybe their thoughts of me are better than mine.
We smile and say we are fine, how are you?
Neither wants to know what is really true.
Some will not see you as you see yourself,
They see only themselves and make up the rest.
What folk say of you when your life has passed,
What they want folk to hear but don't shed a tear.
Maybe it's just me being maudlin today,
Or could it be that the veil slipped away.
We have talked on this over many a brew,
Decided in love that it's just we two.
Not our friends, or our kids, we are not in a race,
We are not first in their lives, they hold that place.
So now this is our time and that's how it should be,
To the end of our days in love and harmony.
May God bless us all with a caring outlook.
May He always smile when He writes in His book,
Saying here is a couple who gave it their best,
In a lifetime of love they tried to honor the rest.
