Love Poem: Who Are You

Who Are You

Five minutes ago,
she knew him as her beloved son
Now she had that scared look in her eye,
memories just vanished
without so much as a goodbye

From her point of view,
she was always stepping in and out of a fog
Couldn't seem to remember things too clearly
It was as if her mind got poisoned
from breathing in too much smog

She loved to move around the house
like she was on a treasure hunt
Searching for those hidden clues,
as to who those two strange men were
Her home of thirty something odd years
at times seemed vaguely familiar to her
Those scattered memories would somehow
begin to seep back whenever she heard
the sound of some Etta James blues

She adored the kind smile on the two strange men faces
They seemed friendly enough
as they sat sipping tea,
and chatted about things
of which she had no memory
She only wished she could remember who they were;
though they insisted they were husband and son,
how could she be certain for sure

It always broke their hearts
when she would ask, who are you?
And they would restart the arduous task
of filling up her empty mind with memories
she would never be able to hold on to

Five minutes ago,
she knew him as her beloved husband
Now she had that wary look in her eye,
memories just vanished
without so much as a goodbye
