Love Poem: Why I Matter

Why I Matter

Why I matter

When glass shatters,
I bleed.

When the ladder needs a leader,
I lead.

When dishes need cleaning,
I rarely make them clatter.

When you're down on your knees
crying, I'll put my arm around you
and listen to your heart shatter.

They may not bring me glamour,
but I love my little dogs.
They give me a joy that
lathers up like soapy bubbles.

But for all of my life,
I've been laughed at, dumped on,
kicked in the face, robbed,
thrown out on the street, raped,
mugged, jumped, screwed-over,
bull-dozed, betrayed
and publicly humiliated.

But God loves me,
my dogs love me
and I care about
the lives of others,
as well as my own,
because of these things
I matter.
