Wish I Knew You When
After all these years, I fear,
our time was far too brief;
for all the laughing, loving, shedding of tears,
our time together slipped away like a thief.
Wish I knew you when life was simple
when children played games of hide and seek
and the only worries were of teenage pimples
while love was but a gentle kiss upon the cheek.
Wish I knew you when they called for that first dance
with two left feet misstepped on the high school floor
casting smiles to catch your eye with every advance
hoping you would smile and ask for more.
Wish I knew you when flowers first bloomed in spring
and at your door I'd softly knock
ready to give you every piece of my heart strings
to begin our time together on the clock.
Wish I knew you when the world turned upside down
we could be hand in hand against it's threats
together we'd paint the town
with nothing to separate our duet.
Wish I knew you when I was all hope and dreams
bold and steady in the passage of time
bound by love weathering all rivers and streams
that ebbed and flowed with love sublime.
After all these years,
our time was brief;
laughing, loving, shedding tears
slipped away, a thief.
